“Revit Family Editor” – Free Course

In Walter Academy organisation, we held a free course “Revit Family Editor” with an accent on Revit MEP component development. The goal of this course was to train potential candidates for employment in Walter AEC and prepare them for work on MEP content development for our clients such as  BIMobject (www.bimobject.com) and BIMsystems (www.bimsystems.de). 

Applicants Mechanical Engineers interested for employment in Walter AEC were invited to attend this course. It was held via an online platform. All the students were obliged to pass the final test if they would like to be employed. Even though we planned to hire only one candidate, we hired two. Their curiosity and readiness to work and explore showed us they are true Walter people!

“Revit Family Editor” is a course that deals with development of Revit families.  In order to understand what this is about, we would like to shortly demonstrate to you the way Revit “thinks.”

All elements in Revit that are created and used in Revit projects represent digital components or elements. These elements are called Revit families. Family is an object that has specific parameters and because of them, family acts in a specific way. Within the boundaries set in the family via parameters, one can generate an endless number of family types, which are variations of this family.
All Revit elements are represented by the following scheme:

Model elements graphically represent real building elements. They are divided into host and component elements. Hosts are those that you typically buildl at the construction site, such as walls, floors, roofs, staircases, etc. Component elements are those that you typically bring to the construction site, such as windows, doors, furniture, sanitary equipment, etc.

View elements represent the traditional architectural drawings.

Annotation elements are divided into datum, which are 3D reference planes and annotation, such as text, dimensions and symbols, which additionally explain the information shown on the drawing.

Families are further divided into system families, components and in-place families.

System families are built into the software, such as walls and floors, as well as views, levels, etc. System families cannot be created nor deleted. Their properties are predefined in the software. However, most system families such as walls, floors and roofs can have more than one type. System family that is also a model element is called a host. Host is an element that can support, accept or ensure structure for other model elements.

Component families can be host-based, which means that they require a host family to be placed ono or they can be free standing. Component families can be created, deleted or modified. This is done in Family Editor, which finally brings us to the topic of our course. Family Editor allows you to create a family and save it with an RFA extension.

This is only a short overview of how Revit is functioning and how it is made. Our course “Revit Family Editor” deals with this topic in detail and enables you to successfully create component families and further use them in the Revit project.

Knowledge about families and how to manipulate them within the project are the most important accept of Revit use.

Using a simple vocabulary, families are a smart part of Revit, they not only contain a graphical information about the building element, but also all the data in connection with the product. For example, one wall as a system family has lots of wall layers as well as information about the materials this wall is built from, its thermal/acoustical characteristics, as well as information on manufacturer, etc.

BIM engineers should possess skills of family creation and manipulation in Revit projects. Both manufacturers and design engineers benefit from this knowledge. Manufacturers are those who seek consulting from Walter AEC in this area, we digitise their products in BIM, place them on online libraries to be used by the design engineers in order to enrich their projects and to be able to create main design and construction drawings. By making their product digital, the manufacturers increase their sale potentials.
